Literacy Pirates

Literacy Pirates provides a high quality, after school learning programme, to improve the reading and writing skills, and increase the confidence and perseverance of children. We run our programmes in fantastical pirate themed learning centres, and now online.

They work with children aged 9 to 13 years old; around the transitional years between primary and secondary school. Literacy Pirates work exclusively with children referred by their school, who are both falling behind and have fewer advantages in their personal circumstances.

The programme is devised and led by teachers, with over 300 volunteers giving young people extra personalised attention. It takes place in a specially created positive learning environment, because learning happens best when we have a smile on our face.

Literacy Pirates:Empowering young Londoners to do better at school and beyond is at the heart of our mission. It’s a value we share with Empower London and one of the key reasons we are thrilled to be one of their chosen charities. We aim to amplify the voices of the young people we support and The London Festival promises to be an exciting and powerful platform for our organisation, we can’t wait!
